Growing Into Giving: Young People’s Engagement With Charity
Growing Into Giving: Young People’s Engagement With Charity
Written by Catherine Walker and Andrew Fisher, this report explores the views of a range of young people in relation to volunteering and giving to charity.
Evidence from the research suggests that young people today define ‘charity’ and ‘giving’ more widely than formal organised charitable activities such as giving money, focusing more on engagement through active involvement such as giving goods to charity shops, buying the Big Issue and Fairtrade goods, and recycling.
Young people also reported feeling that the emphasis on raising money can be disempowering as they have limited funds to give and while believing that they have more to offer charities, feel that there are insufficient opportunities for them to offer their time instead. Interestingly, the majority of young people questioned think that they will be engaged with charities in the future, giving both time and money.
Published in 2002 by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), the report is available from them.
